I have planned to write about this topic for a long time.
I haven't written this until now because I didn't know where to start. Moreover, I don't want to make any mistakes when I interpret his songs. Also, since my critics are often very harsh (to some people), I don't want to be beaten up by some fans if I offend them by accident. (^^;) As a non-Japanese, this is a tough task.
I have visited a lot of Spitz's homepages created by the fans. I found quite a few of them created pages with headings such as "Kusano's Palace" and "Masamune's Kingdom". I can understand that. Instead of saying that Spitz plays great music, I think Kusano writes great lyrics. Of course, other members are important too, since they create the sound and style of Spitz. However, Kusano, as a musican, builds up a world which is very different from other Japanese musicans'. To me, "Kusano's world" is like an island that is standing out from the rest of the world. (^^;) This feeling is particularly strong when I heard songs such as "Yume ja nai", "Ai no kodoba", "Indigo chiheisen" and "Robinson". When I read the lyrics, it is like reading a fiction. I can imagine everything related to the songs I heard, which is based on the description from the lyrics. ( e.g. "Neko ni naritai", "Tsumetai hoho" and "Hibari no kokoro" ) Kusano's personality and preference is also shown clearly from the songs he wrote.
The songs' titles are just as unique as the lyrics. Kusano san seems fond of naming songs by using stilllives and animals. ( e.g. "Sakana", "Aoi kuruma", "Spider", "Cherry", "Umeboshi" ) We can also find quite a few songs with interesting titles such as "Majo tabi ni deru" and " Y". These songs' titles are another important factor to create Spitz's style.
In
my opinion, the cover designs of Spitz's albums and singles help my understanding
to Spitz's music a lot. Those cover designs ( a cat, a drawing, a girl,
a kid ) pave a way for audiences to imagine what the world of Spitz is
like, and create the unique style of Spitz. More often, the original idea
of the cover designs came from Kusano san. His preference ( such as recent
hobbies ) have direct impact on each album's image. Combining this with
the songs' titles and the music ( lyrics ), we can visualize Kusano's world.
