I know that a lot of the Hong Kong immigrants listen to nothing but Cantonese songs, even though they've migrated to Canada for many years. On the other hand, I have not been a fan of Cantonese music since I got into high school in Hong Kong.
When I was in elementary school, I did bought some of the cassette tapes of Cantonese music (e.g. Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung). However, as soon as I got my first radio after I got into high school, I became attracted by the "beauty" of western music. ( Radio Stations in Hong Kong play both Cantonese and English songs, and I found the difference between them right away.)
There are a few reasons why I can't be a fan of Cantonese music. Firstly, there are too many non-original songs. Although Hong Kong musicans have been encouraging local works, the songs promoted are often non-original. Moreover, I am a fan of rock music, but Hong Kong audiences don't accept rock music. Thus, there are only pop and dance music available in Hong Kong. There are very few bands there and too many idols. Finally, because of the preference of audiences, the contents of lyrics are often limited to love. Songs that inspire people are found once in a while, but, in general, songs with interesting contents are rarely found in Cantonese music. On the whole, I think the old songs ( I mean very old songs ) are better.
To
people who love Cantonese music: Don't get mad at me!
